Early detection is the key to cancer survival – accordingly, the La Jolla Community Center is staging a free ovarian cancer awareness lecture on Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m. The center is located at 6811 La Jolla Blvd. Ovarian cancer, seventh most frequently diagnosed female cancer worldwide, is most often found in women aged 55 to 64. From 2008 to 2012, the number of new cases numbered 12.1 per 100,000 women. Five-year survival rates number around 44 percent. By contrast, and depending on the rate of progression, breast cancer survival rates after five years range from 22 to 100 percent.
