First flu death of season reported in San Diego
An 86-year-old San Diego man died of complications due to influenza and is the first local, flu-related death reported this season. The unvaccinated man died on Oct. 1 after a brief hospitalization. Last season, the first flu death occurred Oct. 4, and 86 other San Diego County residents died from influenza, including two children.
So far this season, 203 lab-confirmed influenza cases have been reported, compared to 60 at this same point last year. The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine every year. The current flu vaccines offer protection against pandemic H1N1, as well as influenza A H3N2 and influenza B strains.
See/saw carnival to be held Nov.4
On Saturday, Nov. 4, Point Loma Villages’ children’s boutique, See/Saw, at 3028 Cañon St., kids, transforms its backyard into a mini carnival, lined with balloons and enclosures for cute barnyard animals, to capture the essence of childhood, adventure and the perfect family outing.
Beginning at 1 p.m., parents, grandparents, little ones, neighbors and everyone in-between is invited to the boutique to shop the store’s collection of educational play and imagination goods for baby and kids before stepping into the backyard to intermingle with various adorable farm animals.
OB Halloween Carnival held on Oct. 28 On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. Ocean Beach Recreation Center, at 4726 Santa Monica Ave., is hosting their annual Halloween Carnival with carnival games, costume contest, activities, music, food, and much more.
Bring Halloween bags for prizes and treats, and wear a costume for a chance to win an award in the Halloween costume contest. You can win prizes for most creative, scariest, funniest and prettiest costume.
Wristbands will be sold for $2.
Reverse Trick or Treat event gives kids an opportunity to give back to shelter pets
San Diego Humane Society’s Reverse Trick-or-Treat event on Friday, Oct. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m., invites children of all ages for an opportunity to make toys and goodies for pets and then deliver their hand-crafted treats to adoptable animals throughout the shelter. For children, their parents and herpetologists in need of a fur or scale fix, dogs and even a bearded dragon will be available for interaction. Kids are encouraged to dress in costume, and can also enjoy Halloween-themed animal crafts, a photo booth and a game room complete with corn hole and ring toss.
“Youth events like this one are not only fun for kids, but teach an essential lesson about giving back to our community and the humane treatment of animals,” said Amelia Curtis, education manager for San Diego Humane Society. “Teaching children to value animals not only encourages respect for all living beings, it also establishes a greater sense of responsibility to make the world a better, more humane place.” Located at 5500 Gaines St.
OB photo contest The Ocean Beach Town Council has started a “Share Your OB” photo contest. To enter just tag your best photos of OB with #shareyourOB and post on Instagram or Facebook. Winner receives bragging rights and is entered in a monthly drawing for some cool swag. Each Saturday, a new winner will be announced. Buccaneer Monster Bash: Saturday, Oct. 28 The Maritime Museum of San Diego will hold the second annual Buccaneer Monster Bash, a haunted pirate themed party for adults ages 21 and up on Saturday, Oct 28. OB community to host blood drive with SD Blood Bank
OB will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 1:30 to 7 p.m. at 4840 Niagara St.in the Rite Aid Parking Lot.
About one in 7 people entering a hospital need blood. One pint of blood, which is the amount volunteers give when they donate blood, can save up to three lives. Approximately38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood but less than 10 percent do annually. Since blood is always needed, volunteers are asked to give blood for patients, such as those going through cancer or trauma.
Donors must meet the following eligibility requirements:
17 and older (Age 16 requires a parental consent)
114 pounds and in good health.
Donors are advised to drink plenty of fluids prior to donation. Maintain usual eating habits on the day of donation, avoid fatty foods if possible. All donors must show picture identification upon signing up to donate.
