In response to Sam Van Horne’s letter to the editor in the Nov. 15 edition of the Peninsula Beacon (“Help Scouts keep Pt. Loma Plant Reserve clean”):
The San Diego River Park Foundation and the Friends of The Point Loma Native Plant Reserve wish to thank the Sam Van Horne and the other members of Scout Troop 500 for all of their help over the years at the Point Loma Native Plant Reserve.
This is a very important native plant park that houses a very unique collection of native San Diego plants, trees and shrubs. As development continues in San Diego, native flora is disappearing. Native animals depend on this local flora for food and shelter. The reserve is also a great showcase of a water-wise landscape. It’s very possible to have a drought-tolerant or water-wise garden that is both very attractive and beneficial to local wildlife.
Though the reserve is a city-owned park, it’s through the dedication of volunteers that the reserve is maintained and cared for.
The Friends of the Reserve are in need of help to keep the reserve healthy and flourishing for all of the people and animals that live in the area.
Volunteer work parties are held the first Saturday and third Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.
