A number of local scholastic basketball teams headed into the CIF playoffs this week looking to cap a magical run to a championship.
On the girls side, La Jolla High finished the regular season 11-11 and 3-7 in the Western League. The Lady Vikings lost to University City last week and beat Mission Bay. La Jolla earned the 11th seed and played Kearny High this past Tuesday evening in an opening round contest. Kearny won, 55-36.
Alyssa Wilson and Olivia Waldon have been La Jolla’s scoring leaders all season long.
“We’ve come a long way this season, and I think that we’re poised to make a strong showing in the playoffs,” La Jolla High head coach Ty Eveleth noted.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Lady Torreys rolled into the playoffs with a 62-45 win over Horizon last Friday evening.
Dominique Connors and Chelsea Burns paced LJCD with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Kiara Stinson was every bit a senior at LJCD’s recent Senior Night, tallying 28 points to lead the Lady Torreys to a 75-42 win over Canyon Crest.
Stinson shot 5-for-10 from the 3-point line, 5-for-6 from inside the 3-point stripe and was 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
LJCD finished regular-season action with a record of 19-7.
On the boys side, LJCD dropped a 48-38 decision to Horizon last Friday evening in its regular-season finale. Kevin Ings led the Torreys with 14 points.
LJCD was to host Preuss in a playoff contest Wednesday evening, Feb. 21, as the Village News went to press.
Meantime, The Bishop’s School was also at home in a first-round game Feb. 21, hosting Imperial High.
Finally, Mission Bay held La Jolla High to four first-quarter points en route to a 71-46 victory last Friday.
Andrew Heap paced the Vikings with 22 points.
La Jolla received a bye in first-round CIF action this week.
