Sports clubs merge Two sports clubs on Fay Avenue merged into one March 21. The La Jolla Sports Club at 7825 Fay Ave. purchased Club La Jolla a few blocks away. Nearly all the 500 members have transferred to the La Jolla Sports Club and the Club La Jolla property across from Jonathan’s Market is available for rent. The property owner, Gains Investment Trust, is marketing the 11,183-square-foot space to another health club, women’s spa or restaurant. Club La Jolla owner Gary Rubin said the buy-out was a win-win situation. “It just made a lot of sense both from a business point of view and from a point of view of growth opportunity for my staff and myself, and a great opportunity for my members to get a nice upgrade,” said Rubin, who owned Club La Jolla for 15 years and is now a stakeholder with the La Jolla Sports Club. Nearly all the 500 Club La Jolla members — minus 5 percent — opted to continue their memberships at the La Jolla Sports Club, which now boasts 1,700 members. La Jolla Sports Club is a larger facility than Club La Jolla with more sophisticated equipment, like cardio equipment with private TV screens, plus offers more group exercise classes, Rubin said. In addition to the La Jolla Sports Club, San Diego Sports also owns the Sporting Club at Aventine on La Jolla Village Drive. Mosaic catering names new VP The Ladeki Restaurant Group has named La Jolla resident Rod Coon as vice president of Mosaic Catering. Coon has more than 20 years of special event, business and personal catering experience in San Diego. In 1999, he founded Contemporary Catering in La Jolla, where he handled daily operations and created menus and concepts for events. Coon has also been involved in community events; he coordinated the Gaslamp Festival downtown, managed the Beer Garden service at XXXII SuperFest and handled liquor service management for Street Scene for 12 years. Kennedy to lead research council San Diego businesswoman and community leader Katherine Kennedy has been named the chair of the newly-formed Scripps Research California Council. The Council was formed to raise awareness about The Scripps Research Institute within philanthropic communities and to introduce the Institute’s work to new audiences who will promote the organization within their own networks, according to a press release from Scripps. UTC resident launches private investment company University Town Center resident Marc Channick has launched a new independent investment firm, Delphi Private Advisors, at 4747 Executive Drive. Channick opened the firm in February along with business partners Keith McKenzie and Darren Reinig. Delphi is a fee-based registered investment advisor (RIA) that will provide clients with investment strategy and management as well as active tax management services. The group will also partner with their clients’ other advisors to assist with setting up sophisticated wealth transfer and charitable giving strategies. Real estate agent earns national designation La Jolla real estate agent Irene McCann of Coldwell Banker recently earned the Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) designation from the California Association of Realtors. The GRI was developed for members of the National Realtors Association (NAR) and is administered at the state level. The distinction is recognized nationwide within the real estate industry as an indicator of professionalism and a strong commitment to education, according to the NAR Web site. To earn the GRI, agents must complete 90 hours of real estate coursework on topics including marketing, negotiating, ethics and technology. McCann is a native of La Jolla.
