Bruce Lightner, husband of San Diego City Council President Sherri Lightner, announced March 3 that he will run for his wife’s seat, in which she’s being termed out.
Like his wife, Lightner is an engineer and longtime La Jolla resident.
“Although I had never considered running for public office before, I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring because I feel so strongly about continuing Sherri’s work as an independent, effective voice for our neighborhoods,” Lightner said in a statement emailed to supporters.
Lightner will run against entrepreneurs Barbara Bry and Ray Ellis for the District 1 seat, which represents Carmel Valley, La Jolla, Bird Rock and University City. The primary election is June 7.
Sherri, a Democrat, was elected to the district in 2008 and 2012. She was named council president in 2014.
Lightner, an expert in onboard diagnostics systems for vehicles, holds numerous patents and with his wife owns Lightner Engineering, founded in 1999 as a custom hardware, software and firmware designer.
A fourth candidate for the seat is Louis Rodolico, a political novice who retired a few years ago after a career as a hospital architect.
