Several local scholastic girls soccer teams have been following the bouncing ball to victories lately. At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights under head coach Brian Quinnn came into action this week with a 10-2-1 record. Goalkeeper Devan Osegueda has seven consecutive shutouts, which is a testament to the defense playing really well and her ability to make key saves when called upon. Defenders Jenn Akin, Zoe Merewether, Maya Theuer, Elyse Tierney and Dana Christenson have all been playing well, according to Quinn. On the attacking side, Kaylie Davidson has been in good form and Sarah Noble, Francis Harvey and Laura Aguilar starred in the “Butch Lee” Cathedral Catholic tournament, which the Lady Knights won. Bishop’s is rated 32nd nationally in a poll conducted by ESPNrise, which tracks high school sports throughout the country. Locally, the Lady Knights are rated in the top 5 with the Division I powerhouses: Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Poway and Division II school Westview. “We are looking forward to league play, with Francis Parker again being the team to compete with although both Canyon Crest and La Jolla Country Day have had good starts to the season,” Quinn noted. At neighboring La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings under head coach Kristin Jones won their last two games, scoring a 2-0 win over Mission Bay and a 6-2 win over Canyon Crest. “Our offense was carried by Brianna Chapman and Amanda Beary, and the defense has been becoming more and more consistent as Courtney Volger and Jessica Wood are showing great leadership,” Jones said. “After a rocky start during their tournament season, the whole team is back and ready to defend their Western League title.” At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Lady Torreys under head coach Dave Jenkins head into action this week with a mark of 3-2-1. In a 2-1 loss recently to Clairemont High, LJCD played some strong soccer despite coming back from the recent holiday break. “There was a lot of energy, great movement off the ball, a lot of communication, great touches and nice movement of the ball up and down the field, side to side,” Jenkins said. “They played most of the early part of the game in the Clairemont end of the field but couldn’t convert any of the scoring opportunities.” LJCD’s lone goal came on a penalty kick from Ana Cruz after a Clairemont hand ball in the penalty area. This was junior Erika Shepard’s first game after recovering from injuries sustained during her club soccer season. “She’s a great addition to the team and played very well last night,” Jenkins noted. “She started at forward, moved to outside midfield, then outside defender and finished up the game at sweeper.” According to Jenkins, Emily Eibl also played well with a lot of energy all game.  “Emily started at outside mid during the first half and finished the game at forward. Sophomore Kelly Mordente, a very reliable outside defender, also had a strong game,” Jenkins added.
