The Bird Rock Community Council issued an e-mailed warning to residents who use the local bike path, indicating that two dogs were recently poisoned after being exposed to the toxins of century plants on the west side of the path off Via del Norte. The plants, which are a member of the agave family, have expanded into a large grove and are “large and bluish with sharp thorns on the ends of the leaves,” according to the notice. Dogs may be poisoned as a result of chasing squirrels that hide in the plants and ingesting the toxic residue that clings to their fur. According to the notice, one of the dogs died as a result of the poison and one survived after extensive emergency care and hospitalization.
