The San Diego Society of Professional Journalism celebrated the winners of its 2017 Journalism Contest during the organization’s annual banquet on July 20. Beach & Bay Press editor Thomas Melville won four awards for his work during the past year.
Melville won first place in News Design for the front page “Leap Year,” which was published on Feb. 25, 2016. He earned a second place award in the Feature Photo category for “Jetty Cats,” which was published July 28, 2016. Melville earned a second place in the News Photo category for “Hope for the Homeless,” which came out Aug. 11, 2016. And he took home a third place in Sports Photo for the shot “Strength and Honor,” which was published on Feb. 11, 2016. In October of last year, Melville earned two photography awards in the San Diego Press Club’s 43rd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards.
