The Beach Bar Olympics will be held at The Local PB, a neighborhood pub, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, The Beach Bar Olympics is a casual competition between teams of bartenders and barbacks; possible events include Coaster Toss, Keg Carry, Cocktail Brewing, and Pour Testing.
Participants will be charged an entry fee, with all proceeds going to benefit the Big Josh Foundation. The BJF is a nonprofit recently founded to support people in the service industry who are unable to work due to medical conditions. The foundation is named after “Big” Josh Gehlbach, a 20-year veteran of the Pacific Beach restaurant and bar industry. Gehlbach spent his career working cheerfully and faithfully as a barback, bartender, security guard, and general manager, before being diagnosed with terminal non-smoking lung cancer at age 40. Now the Big Josh Foundation provides funding to Josh and other service-industry workers, to offset the loss of income created by a serious illness.
Participants in the event will compete in teams of two, and all will be provided with a free breakfast buffet, hosted drinks, and a Big Josh Foundation T-shirt.
