Ocean Beach dives into summer on Saturday, June 23 when it hosts the 33rd annual OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival. A perennial Peninsula favorite and one of San Diego’s most defining community celebrations, the OB Street Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the heart of the festival anchored on Newport Avenue between Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and the beach. On tap for the all-inclusive event is an Artists’ Alley, local food and specialty vendors, beachfront entertainment and beer garden, six stages of live music, Wonderland Children’s Area with pony rides, demonstrations like skateboard exhibitions, two community mural projects and a sizzling chili cook-off. The chili cook-off will be held on the lawn at the foot of Newport Avenue. Cook-off hours are 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. “We really try to ensure that there is something for everyone at the street fair,” said Barbara Iacometti, street fair chairwoman and president of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA), which plans and hosts the event each year. To accommodate the expected 70,000 fairgoers annually, shuttles by Old Town Trolley will run to and from two designated parking lots. To encourage and support cyclists, a free bike valet is being offered for the first time in the fair’s history. New attractions this year include laser tag and a giant waterslide in Saratoga Park on the corner of Ebers Street and Saratoga Avenue. Also, a new music venue has been added at Electric Ladyland to spread the continuous sounds of local musicians from six stages. In honor of Ocean Beach’s 125th anniversary this year, a commemorative mural has been designed, special logo merchandise will be sold and an anniversary pale ale crafted by Pizza Port Brewery will be sold at the beer garden. With a few exceptions, like the beer garden, chili tasting and painting tiles for the community murals, the event is free. Proceeds raised from chili cook-off ticket sales will help fund the Ocean Beach Fourth of July Fireworks from the OB Pier. Portions of the proceeds of beer sales and anniversary merchandise aid beautification projects in Ocean Beach, with an emphasis on waterfront improvements. Getting to and from the festival will be convenient for drivers and cyclists alike. The San Diego County Bike Coalition will man the free bike valet at Newport Avenue and Bacon Street. Parking will be available on lots at Robb Field and at Sea World Drive and Pacific Highway. Free shuttles will operate regularly to and from the lots from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. From Robb Field, trolleys will run every half hour. From Sea World Drive at Pacific Highway, trolleys will run every hour.
