PACIFIC BEACH — Two sides of a heated issue gave presentations explaining why the Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) should or should not lend its approval of a proposed deck expansion to the Pacific Beach Shore Club at the PBTC’s general membership meeting July 21. Barrett Rinzler, an owner of the Shore Club located at 4343 Ocean Blvd., presented meeting attendees with reasons to support the expansion. These included the bar’s support of community events and fundraising alongside its desire to remain competitive with neighboring restaurants and bars. Scott Chipman, a general member of the PBTC, spoke second and presented reasons why the Shore Club should not receive support from the PBTC. He noted that crime near the business district on Garnet Avenue is already high, coupled by concerns that the expansion will lead to more alcohol consumption, which he fears will lead to more crime in the area. The PBTC general membership will receive a mail-in ballot with the August newsletter to either support or not support the deck expansion. The result of the vote will lead to a an advisory position by the PBTC, but will not officially decide the ultimate fate of the proposed expansion.
