Minsarah Trio next on summer jazz menu German pianist Florian Weber, Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz and San Diego-based bassist Jeff Denson are each accomplished, award-winning musicians. Together, they are the Minsarah Trio, which perform at the Athenaeum next Thursday as part of the Farrell Family Jazz summer series. Minsarah’s self-titled 2006 CD, according to one critic, was infused with “fanciful energy” and “eccentric charm mixed with musical intelligence.” The trio’s 2008 collaboration with alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz demonstrates a dedication to sophisticated jazz improvisation. Minsarah is Hebrew for prism, “translucent glass or crystal used to form a spectrum of light separated according to colors.” The prism’s cross-section is usually triangular — befitting three musicians who contribute compositions and share equal leadership in the trio. Hear this dynamic, multinational group Thursday, July 16, 7:30 p.m., at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St. Tickets are $24; call (858) 454-5872. This longstanding event is looked forward to by performers and community alike. The “Pops” tradition began 29 years ago as part of an annual Summer Wednesday Nights Family series. The performance was moved to Fridays to stimulate more community interest. Past programs have included many different themes, from the Beatles to Broadway. Every show has prompted a standing ovation, and we expect this year’s tribute to our country, “Celebrate America,” to do the same. This theme for 2009 — “Celebrate America: A Musical Appreciation of Our Nation Under God” — is being organized and directed by the choir’s director of music, Dr. Myron Tweed. Former organist and composer-in-residence Mark Dorian will be returning to perform and accompany the choir. Guest artists from the community will join soloists and instrumentalists from the choir to delight and entertain. As popular as the concert is the ice cream social immediately following the performance. You can’t beat the entertainment or the price — admission is free! Childcare is available by calling the church office no later than 48 hours in advance. An additional feature this year is that the concert will be emceed by the congregation’s new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Walter Dilg. And there will be a surprise appearance by that American icon — well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we told you! Come join us for this annual treat of toe-tapping, sing-along favorites and delicious ice cream with all the “fixings.” La Jolla United Methodist Church is located at 6063 La Jolla Blvd. For information or to reserve childcare, call (858) 454-7108.
