Some 14 teams involving about 130 participants will rally at Relay for Life of La Jolla, a fundraiser to benefit anti-cancer research, on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, beginning at 9 a.m. the 13th and proceeding for 24 hours on the Muirlands Middle School baseball field, 1056 Nautilus St. Teams of eight to 20 members take turns walking the track that surrounds the field, ideally with at least one member of a given team on the track. Teams are also assigned campsites to set up tables and chairs from which to watch the entertainment. The program includes guest speakers and memorial luminaria bags, a slideshow and a memorial lap. Cirque du Relay, the event’s carnival, will feature face painting, cotton candy, popcorn, Kona Ice La Jolla shaved ice, a photo booth, lap beads, DNA-strand necklaces, a prize wheel and food fundraisers, including pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, midnight pizza and a pancake breakfast on June 14. Chipotle in La Jolla Village Square will donate burritos for the event’s survivor lunch, and Brick and Bell is donating coffee and mini-scones. The Cottage is donating coffee cake.
The 2015 participants have so far raised more than $30,000.

Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising event in the interest of bringing an end to cancer. It recognizes people and communities worldwide in remembering lost loved ones and taking action to finish the fight.
