Given the recent fanfare over the U.S. women’s national team winning the World Cup, it should come as no surprise that there is excitement locally regarding soccer.
Heading into this weekend, the Albion Cup National Soccer Showcase will be played around the greater San Diego area, starting July 13 and concluding on July 15.
The event, set up for boys and girls (ages U9-U19), guarantees three games for each team. The semifinals and championships will be played on July 15. Teams will compete in either the Top Showcase Group or the Cup Group.
Games will be played at a variety of sites including Mission Bay High School, Allen Field, Robb Field and UC San Diego, among others.
In its 17th year, the event involves some of the top teams from around the nation. The showcase is expected to draw more than 500 teams and feature more than 1,000 games over three days. For those looking to continue their games at the next level, various college coaches will be in town scouting the players.
In the past, this event has featured teams from Southern and Northern California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida, New York and many other states. It has also been visited by teams from Canada, England and several other countries.
