The University City girls varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams finished undefeated in league play this season going 12-0 and 6-0 respectively.
“We were undefeated last year as well for varsity, so it was kind of the expectation this year that we wanted to uphold our undefeated record,” said varsity head coach Lizzy Des Enfants. “Starting at the beginning of the season that was all we talked about, to be undefeated league champs again.
The varsity team finished with a 16-4 overall record and also as the third seed in Eastern League. This earned the team a first-round bye in CIF playoffs as they will play the winner of Eastlake vs. Academy of Our Lady of Peace on Friday. The varsity team had six opponents in its league while the junior varsity team, which is led by head coach Jessie Franco, had three opponents in the league with their side finishing 12-5-1 overall.
“The girls really strived to get to that point,” Des Enfants added. “We had a lot of new players who came on this year. I feel like they all just worked really hard.”
The first league opponent the varsity team faced came at home versus Point Loma on March 15 winning convincingly 17-5. Academy of Our Lady of Peace followed on March 17 with University City winning 14-10. They followed up that performance with a dramatic 13-12 win over Mira Mesa on March 24. After San Diego High School had to forfeit on April 5, University City then went on to beat Mission Bay 17-2 on April 7 and then nipped Westview 14-13 on April 11.
UCHS then went on to beat Canyon Hills 17-5 and then all the rematches against its Eastern League opponents by a combined score of 86-47. Out of its possible two opponents on Friday, May 12 for CIF playoffs, University City is more familiar with the Academy of Our Lady of Peace having won both matches this season. UCHS has not faced Eastlake since 2022 when they came out with a 15-4 home victory in their second game of that season.
