Surf Club Surf Shop, 952 Garnet Ave., will celebrate its 30th anniversary this weekend, said owner Jeff Kinney, who opened the shop in 1980. “I’ve seen a lot of surf shops come and go and Jeff is still here,” said E.J Moore of La Jolla, who has been shopping at Surf Club since 1983. The store originally sold mostly surfboards and now carries a popular selection of apparel and surfing supplies such as leashes, wax and wetsuits. “I thank the stars that I’ve just stuck true to what I do,” Kinney said. Even through a tough economy, Kinney has stuck with what he does best and that is selling fun. “He’s the kind of person that I aspire to be,” said Paul Grabanski, a long-time patron. Grabanski has been shopping at the Surf club since he was a child and now shops there for his son. Stories like this is what Kinney is most proud of. He appreciates the long time friends and customers he has met inside the shop over the last three decades. “I’m staying put,” Kinney said of his future plans. “I’ll change when change is necessary.” Kinney and his wife, Donna, live in Clairemont and have two grown sons, 21 and 23. So much of the couple’s life has evolved or revolves around the shop. “This is so beyond a retail surf shop,” Kinney said. Items at the store will be up to 30 percent off and prizes will be raffled off during the store’s anniversary sale this weekend. For more information, visit www.surfclubsurfshop.com.
