Charles Koll Jewelers at the University Towne Center (UTC) mall sold more diamond rings, earrings and bracelets on Nov. 17 than it did during the entire month of November the year before. The jewelers brought in a stampede of customers last month not due to a newfound consumer desire but because the store began its liquidation sale that day and is offering up to 60 percent off its merchandise. “Business is absolutely bursting at the seams but we’re not making a profit,” said owner Malcolm Koll, whose father Charles opened the store 18 years ago at UTC. Koll plans to eventually close its Fashion Valley Mall store as well, and purchase his own building. Koll did not want to disclose the future location because he is in the process of bidding for the real estate. “We manufacture 50 to 60 percent of what we sell, and being in a mall location isn’t conducive to that because the stores [in the mall] are smaller… We need 3,000 to 4,000 square feet, and to do that in a mall is cost prohibitive,” Koll said. The reduced prices in commercial real estate and the fact Koll’s UTC lease expires early next year created the perfect storm for Koll to leave the mall. “The commercial real estate market looks more accessible than ever before,” Koll said. “I’ve raised enough money to buy my own building.” For information, call (858) 558-7838.
