An excellent effort during the regular year unfortunately didn’t overlap into the postseason, as the La Jolla High School Vikings came up short in the California Interscholastic Foundation Division II championship, held June 6 at the University of San Diego’s Fowler Field. The San Ysidro Cougars won 7-2, which took nothing away from the Vikes’ 24-9 regular-season mark. The Cougars have enormous slugging percentages, and several are Division II home run leaders. The Vikings were playing for the school’s first Division II championship in 15 years, having gotten to the final round by defeating Scripps Ranch High School 6-1. The team has ten seniors, including Tim Holdgrafer, who pitched six shutout innings against Scripps Ranch.
