Amid a voter turnout of just over half the February primary’s
60 percent showing, Jerry Sanders won a second term as San Diego’s mayor Tuesday, while incumbent city attorney Mike Aguirre will try to follow suit in a November runoff election with Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith. Early returns showed Sanders with a 52-38 percent lead over chief rival Steve Francis. The Aguirre-Goldsmith race was much closer, with Goldsmith leading 31-28 percent. The thin margin will require a runoff on Nov. 4, the date of the 2008 general election. Voters also OK’d Proposition 99, the controversial measure that protects owner-occupied homes from government seizure. Proposition 98, which would have similarly protected businesses, was rejected.
