San Diego Superior Court Judge Charles R. Hayes will retire on Aug. 16 after 24 years serving on the bench. Appointed by Governor George Deukmejian in 1986, Hayes began his career serving in Municipal Court in 1986. He served on more than 700 cases as a civil trial judge during his 15-year tenure. Prior to serving as superior court judge, he presided over the capital murder trial of Cleophus Prince, the so-called “Clairemont Killer.” Hayes studied law at the California Western School of Law, graduating in 1969 with his J.D. His undergraduate degree was in Political Science from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1966.
