Rooms with a View Arguably one of the best breakfast views in La Jolla Cove, Brockton Villa Restaurant, 1235 Coast Blvd., is a house tucked into a hillside overlooking the ocean. This was one of the area’s first beach cottages, built in 1894 as a weekend retreat for a San Diego physician. Now it’s just what the doctor ordered: a breakfast retreat for many visitors who savor the menu as much as the view. Take a tour of the restaurant and the offerings before deciding. The world-famous Coast Toast borrows from the soufflé, serving up extra-rich French toast with a hint of orange. The cleverly named and prepared Tower of Bagel defies gravity with layers of house-cured lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, capers and red onion. Eggs Ipanema are poached eggs with Canadian bacon and a spicy tomato coconut sauce. Beginning at 11 a.m., the restaurant serves “Brocktails” such as Bloody Mary, Tangerine Mimosa and Green Apple Martinis. The restaurant also serves breakfast at its younger sister property called Beaumont’s in Bird Rock at 5662 La Jolla Blvd., (858) 459-0474. Breakfast entrees at Brockton average $10 to $15. Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturdays and Sundays to noon. (858) 454-7393, www.brocktonvilla.com. Wild About Harry’s Proudly serving La Jolla residents and visitors since 1960, Harry’s Coffee Shop, 7545 Girard Ave., immediately feels like a comfortable step back in time to a classic breakfast. Tucked into the business district of Girard Avenue, Harry’s serves the most important meal of the day all day, seven days a week. Guests can choose from more private booths, the lively outdoor patio facing Girard Avenue or the counter. The swivel stools at the counter are the best seats in the house for watching the seamless traffic flow of a busy diner. Choosing a seat is the easy decision; choosing what to eat can be much more difficult. Hearty portions are displayed on two long panels of a six-panel menu. Choices range from nearly 20 appropriately named Ummlettes, nutty pecan banana waffles, cheese blintzes with fruit and sour cream, silver dollar pancakes and all the breakfast sides one can think of. For the person who craves a sandwich instead, Harry’s serves up classics including Reubens, clubs, grilled chicken breast and tuna melts. Knowledgeable waiters make a difficult decision easier, describing the specials of the day and exactly how an item is prepared or how spicy a side of salsa can be. Most menu items at Harry’s range from $6 to $10. The restaurant is open daily 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., (858) 454-7381, www.harryscoffeeshop.com. Cottage Charm Sunny-side up in more ways than one, the charming yellow and white exterior of The Cottage, 7702 Fay Ave., greets locals and tourists alike. The former “Columbine” cottage, built in the early 1900s, was converted to a home for hungry diners in the mid-1980s, and has put out the welcome mat ever since. Both the comfortable indoor seating and usually more desirable outdoor tables nestled under patio umbrellas give regulars a place to greet their neighbors, and tourists a chance to not feel like a tourist. Known for its California Cuisine, the breakfast menu offers famous French toast stuffed with strawberry compote and Mascarpone cheese. Several offerings are named for locals and locales, such as Laura’s meatloaf hash and the Windansea omelet with Havarti cheese and house-made Hollandaise. Breakfast is never rushed, and gives a delightful start to any day. The Cottage is open for all meals, but offers breakfast Mondays through Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturdays 7:30 a.m. to noon, and Sundays, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Breakfasts average in the $7 to $12 range. Special Occasion It’s not unusual to see morning visitors to La Valencia Hotel, 1132 Prospect St., laden with birthday gifts, shower presents or floral bouquets. The La Jolla landmark with the ocean view is often the preferred site of special occasions, but its cuisine and ambiance provide reason enough to celebrate. At “La V,” as it’s sometime referred to, there’s breakfast . . . and then there’s brunch. In the elegantly appointed Mediterranean Room with large windows overlooking the ocean, breakfast is served daily except Sunday. Eye-openers range from corn flake-crusted French toast to peanut butter waffles to crab and avocado omelets. While any meal at La Valencia is special, Sunday Brunch is spectacular, with traditional breakfast items and welcome surprises. Blue Point oysters, large tiger prawns and Alaskan king crab catch most of the attention at the seafood station. The buffet station features not only omelets, but also sushi made to order, along with Eggs Benedict, Paella Valencia and two chef’s choice pastas. Over at the carving station, roasted meats include leg of lamb, pork loin and prime sirloin. Even if it’s a challenge, pace yourself and save room for dessert, including chef’s choice of cakes and pies and a chocolate fountain. Orange juice and champagne flow freely throughout the meal. Most breakfast entrees range from $12 to $20, Mondays through Saturdays, 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday brunch is $49 for adults; children 5 to 12 are $26, (reservations recommended) 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., (858) 551-3765, www.lavalencia.com.
