Discover PB presenting new MAD proposal to PBTC
Representatives from Discover Pacific Beach will present its revised maintenance assessment district (MAD) plan to the Pacific Beach Town Council during its monthly general meeting Wednesday, July 16, at 6:30 at the Earl & Birdie Taylor Library.
Resistance by residents blocked the original proposal, which called for fees paid by residential and commercial property owners that fall within the district’s boundaries.
Sgt. Howard Labore of the San Diego Police Department’s vice division, will also be in attendance to discuss SDPD’s role in alcohol-related law enforcement and the issuing of permits to sell alcohol.

PB Rec ‘Celebrates the Family’ with a day of fun at Kate Sessions
The Pacific Beach Recreation Center is inviting parents and their kids to its annual “Celebrate the Family” event Sunday, July 13, from noon to 4 p.m.
The afternoon will be fun-filled, with activities including an astro jump, crafts, face painting and a water slip-n-slide at this free event. The entertainment includes live music and fun food and drinks, including popcorn and snowcones, available for a nominal fee.
The event will take place at Kate Sessions Park, 5115 Soledad Road, near Lamont Street just north of Beryl.
The event is sponsored by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department, Friends of Kate Sessions Park and the Pacific Beach Town Council.

Family hosts memorial for Kon-Tiki owner
Friends and family are holding a memorial for Jorge Arrues at Kon-TIki Motorcycles, 1335 Garnet Ave., Saturday July 12, at 5 p.m. The event will celebrates Arrues’ life through photos and personal recollections. Guests are invited to bring a potluck dish.
Arrues passed away Monday, June 23, surrounded by his family.
Born in Argentina on August 22, 1928, Arrues immigrated to the United States in 1964 in search of a better life for his young family far away from the violence and turmoil that plagued his native country.
A skilled tuner and machinist, Arrues established himself in San Diego, and by 1965 he opened Kon-Tiki Motorcycles on Garnet Avenue. The shop is in continuous operation to this day, managed by his son Alex.

Man flees from intruders demanding cash
Four intruders entered a home in the 1900 block of Beryl Street through an unlocked door Wednesday, July 2, at approximately 9:15 p.m., and told the 77-year-old resident they needed money.
According to police reports, the intruders wanted the victim to go to an ATM and attempted to get him inside their Chrysler 300 sedan. The victim broke free and ran away, while the suspects fled with the man’s wallet. Reports stated the victim knew the suspects.
WaveHouse hosts Beach Improvement fundraiser
The San Diego Beach Improvement Group (BIG) is holding its second annual Summer Social Fundraiser Friday, July 11, at the WaveHouse at Belmont Park.
The event begins at 7 p.m. and features a performance by Dave Matthews tribute band Stepping Feet.
The Pro King & Queen Volleyball Exhibition starts at 11 a.m. with finals scheduled at 5 and 6 p.m.
Admission is $5 and will also feature games, raffle prizes and an auction. Funds from the event will pay for projects such as bike racks and drinking fountains in South Mission Beach.

Pedestrian hit crossing in marked crosswalk
A 67-year-old woman was struck and killed Tuesday, July 8, crossing Van Nuys Street in the North Pacific Beach / Bird Rock area by a man driving a Ford F150 truck.
At 7:45 a.m., the woman was in the marked crosswalk when the driver made a left turn from 700 Van Nuys to 5300 La Jolla Mesa Drive. Alcohol was not a factor.
