La Jolla baseball opens with win
The La Jolla High Vikings opened their 2007 varsity baseball season last week by defeating The Bishop’s School in the Bully’s East Tournament. The Vikings came from behind twice and eventually pulled away for an 11-4 victory.
Zach Tonks went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Jim Filter had two hits and three runs batted in to propel the La Jolla offense. Wyatt Hoff went five innings on the mound to earn his first victory of the season.
La Jolla was to continue the Bully’s tourney this week against Francis Parker, El Cajon and Southwest High.
Golfers head ‘fore’ fest
The 10th annual Golf Fest is coming to town from Friday, March 9, through Sunday, March 11, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.
The golf extravaganza, presented by Mercedes Benz of San Diego, is one of the biggest and most interactive golf events in the Southwest. Top retailers in golf equipment, clothing, resorts and golf courses will be present, including Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Nike, Ping and Taylormade.
Golf Fest attendees will get the opportunity to experience the latest innovations and products in the industry. Free golf instruction from San Diego’s top PGA and LPGA professionals will be available, as well as the chance to try out the latest virtual golf simulators.
Attendees can also compete for the chance to take home a new 2007 E350 Mercedes Benz. Raffles for golf equipment, tee times and golf vacations to Austria will also be part of the fun.
Kids can enjoy the fun, too, at Boomer’s KidZone featuring video games and giveaways.
Admission for the event is $10 for adults; children under the age of 12 are free. Each paid attendee will receive a free round of golf at Warner Springs Ranch as well as a subscription to Golf Digest or Golf For Women magazine.
Show hours are Friday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Scorpions name coaching staff, hold tryouts
Daniel Tovar has been named the new head coach of the SoCal Scorpions women’s football team. The Scorpions, which have played their home contests at La Jolla High’s Edwards Stadium, open play in August.
In addition to Tovar, the Scorpions announced that Mark Ring, formerly the team’s sole multi-season offensive line coach, will also be taking the reins of offensive coordinator.
Ring was partially responsible for last season’s highest scoring offensive performance in franchise history. The Scorpions fell 34-3 to Dallas last season in the AFC Championship game of the Women’s Professional Football League.
Also new to the team’s offense will be coach Simms Wooten. Wooten arrives with several years of semipro experience, including being named the San Diego Saints Offensive Player of the Year in 2001.
“I have to admit, I have not felt this excited about a season this early in a long time,” said Ann Bagala, the team’s owner.
The Scorpions have 23 returning veteran players this season, including all of their 2006 WPFL All-Pro players.
The team will be holding open tryouts on March 17 and March 24 for women who would like to become part of the 2007 roster. Women at least 18 years old can register on the team’s Web site, www.socalscorpions.com.
