Tuning up for the City Conference and CIF meets, the La Jolla High boys and girls swim teams scored some top times in a meet with Poway Wednesday, April 30.
“The boys and girls turned in an excellent performance in their meet against Poway last Wednesday,” said Tom Atwell, La Jolla High head swim coach. “The girls had some excellent swims from Grace Benefield and Tami Tran. The boys looked exceptionally strong, with their relays turning in some of the fastest times in the county this season. Both groups look tapered and ready for City Conference and CIF.”
While Poway won the boys meet 98-86, the Vikings got some strong performances as Eric Hedlin (freshman) placed first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49:82, and 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48:56.
Tyler Woods (junior) placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22:60, and first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49:23, followed by Troy LeLoup (junior) of 51:08.
Hunter Gettlefinger (junior) placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57:07, and Alex Polyak (sophomore) placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04:48.
Despite dropping a 108-77 decision, the La Jolla girls swam strong with Kelly Wahl (senior) placing first in the 50 freestyle in 26:87 and Kate Woods (sophomore) coming in third with a time of 27:13. Benefield (junior) swam a 200 individual medley in 2:20:91, placing second, and Havyne Cooper (junior) placed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a 1:04:66.

At La Jolla Country Day School, the Lady Torreys finished at 3-3 and will send several girls to the City Conference championships.
LJCD will be led by seniors Melanie Kaplan (200 and 500 free), Norae Shakur (200 I.M. and 100 fly), Chelsea Burns (50 free and 100 free) and Penny Flicker (200 I.M. and 100 back).
The seniors will be joined by juniors Claire Altree (500 free and 100 back) and Kelly Janus (100 fly), as well as freshman Alexandra Trifunovic (200 I.M. and 100 free).
LJCD’s boys team finished with a 2-4 record and will also be represented at the City meet.
The Torreys will be led by senior Ryan Frace (100 back). He is accompanied by juniors Jihoon Yoon (200 I.M. and 100 breast) and Henry Clausner (50 free and 100 breast), as well as freshman Donald Dean (50 free and 100 fly).
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights head into the City Conference meet on a high as they raised their record to 6-1 last week with a 108-61 win over University City High.
“I have high hopes for this championship,” Bishop’s head swim coach Chad Bishop said. “As one of the smallest schools in Division II, we always do better in City championships and CIF than we do in one-on-one meets. This year we’ve swept the one-on-one meets (aside from Cathedral).”
Bishop’s has been led to date by Sarah Presant, Dominique Sardo, Noel Elgamal, Andrea Basaraba and Sam Allen.
