If voters in the 53rd Congressional District want to maintain the “status quo” in government with its unchecked spending and unenforced illegal immigration control, if taxpayers want to continue to pay for the Iraq War with their taxes, as both parties posture and “strategically” do nothing to rein in this president’s obsession for unjustified conflict, as the body count of the dead and wounded increases daily, if you want to continue to support legislators with your taxes who write “pork barrel” legislation with “earmark” attachments, who grant themselves a “license to steal” from your Social Security and Medicare funds, who look the other way as the President unconstitutionally enacts his own laws for excessive spending to declaring war to defining what torture is for detained suspected combatants, vote for major party candidates.
However, if you want to make a change in Congress, consider a candidate who won’t accept PAC or lobby money when elected, which is the link between ongoing corruption and the lawmakers. Consider a candidate who will vote immediately to stop funding for the Iraq War, who will vote against the “corporate welfare” subsidized by your taxes, who will initiate a “lockbox” vote on your Social Security and Medicare, who will seek to enforce border control and appoint American-based companies for port security. Consider a candidate who will vote to cut taxes and spending.
In sharp contrast, according to the National Taxpayers Union, incumbent Congresswoman Susan Davis (D), your representative since 2000, has voted to increase spending on 316 bills while voting to decrease spending on only nine bills, up to and including the first seven months of the present term of the 109th Congress. These bills signed by Congresswoman Davis have cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. Given the financially precarious nature of trying to run a country, a business or a home during the worst phase of this nation’s economic history because of existing deficits, her actions, coupled with a President who seldom exercises a veto, are most irresponsible.
In another sharp contrast to my stance on the Mount Soledad Memorial, Congresswoman Davis voted to strike down this monument, a symbol of remembrance for the thousands of service men and women who served this country. As a former officer who served three years on active duty for the U.S. Navy/Marines, I personally resent her vote. I also oppose the passage of Proposition A, the attempts by special interests to relocate Lindbergh Field commercial airport to Miramar, under any circumstances, whether the Marines stay or leave San Diego.
If you voters who have complained about this Congress, like most of us, are truly serious about making changes, then the composition of Congress must change. Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity was “doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result each time.” Voters will be my employers, not the special interests.
