An upcoming, free acoustic music showcase hosted by Westfield North County will feature several Point Loma teens during a “Rhythm & Youth” event on June 1 and 2. The event will showcase 28 artists, all of whom are under 18, giving them the opportunity to perform live in front of an audience — many for the first time. The event emcee will be Tim Pyles, host of the all-local music program “The Local 94/9” on San Diego radio station FM94/9. Point Loma performers include the following: • Crystal Rose Rose, 15, sings with a few of her friends in a cover band, playing bluesy songs like “Dr. Feelgood.” Rose said she loves singing in the Nazarene College Gospel Choir, as well. Writing serves as a way of expression and she said she is thrilled to continue writing and improving her guitar skills. She looks up to artists like Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin and Adele. Rose describes her genre as bluesy and country-like. She said she believes inspiration is everywhere and that songs should unravel a story with messages to comfort the listener’s heart. • Alison Bell Bell seems like a typical 14-year-old girl who loves school and hanging around Point Loma with her friends. But ever since she was very little, she has had a strong connection to music. Whether singing karaoke at age 2, playing solo with her acoustic guitar or rocking a full set at the House of Blues with her band, Fate by Friday, Bell said she loves all styles of music. Her influences range from the sweet style of Taylor Swift and Amy Winehouse to the gritty hard rock of Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless. She plays many instruments, including guitar, keys and some drums but mostly loves to sing, play acoustic guitar and is almost always on the electric bass in her band. • James Cesena Cesena is a 14-year-old lead singer from the Point Loma based band Fate by Friday. He was first a singer, then a musician, and now a performer — a process that his taken him three years to achieve. Cesena enjoys playing so much that would like for this to become his full-time profession. His favorite inspirational quote is, “Being a musician is like being an artist except their canvas is silence.” Other event supporters include Jeff McCullough, founder of Tree Hill Media and Song For Food® album music producer, arranger, composer and songwriter; Peninsula music staple Glen Fisher, bassist, composer, arts education consultant and founder of First Friday Music Club; and Johnny Bell, founder of the San Diego Kids Expo & Fair. “Rhythm & Youth” takes place June 1 and 2 from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.westfield.com/northcounty, or call (760) 489-0631.
