The La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School girls basketball team used its top ranking to score a 66-46 win over second-ranked Mount Miguel last week. The Lady Torreys took a 32-18 lead at halftime, holding Mt. Miguel to just two offensive rebounds.  Ariana Elegado led all scorers with 24 points and dished out six assists; she also reached a personal milestone in scoring her 1,000th career point on a driving lay-up with 7:24 left in the game.  Briteesha Solomon scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Maya Hood had six points and 10 rebounds and Kelsey Plum added six points and eight rebounds. In what may have been one of the most lopsided girls basketball games in recent memory, LJCD rolled and then some last week, posting a 96-10 win over Santa Fe Christian. LJCD (15-3) led 51-5 at halftime and was never seriously threatened, holding SFC scoreless in the second quarter. Elegado led the way for LJCD with 24 points and 11 assists, while Plum notched 21 points and Solomon added 19. In a recent 64-20 victory over Canyon Crest, the Lady Torreys scored early and often to take a 29-9 lead over Canyon Crest at the end of the first half. LJCD never looked back, outscoring the Lady Ravens in each quarter. Hood led all scorers with 16 points and Elegado added 15 points and 10 assists. Also in double figures were Solomon with 12 points and eight steals, while Plum added 11 points in the winning effort. In a 58-49 victory over Beverly Hills in the Beverley Hills Showcase, LJCD withstood a late charge by the Lady Normans to score the victory. Solomon led the scoring with 16 points and Hood added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Elegado had a double–double of her own with 13 points and 13 assists and was named player of the game. On the boys side, LJCD recently suffered a close Coastal League defeat at the hands of Francis Parker, 55-52.  The Torreys fought back from 11 down in the fourth quarter to rally to within two, with only seconds remaining.  LJCD was led by sophomore Frankie Bamford’s double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Ryan Watt contributed 13 points and nine boards.  “The team is trying to regain some consistency as they recover from injuries to key players, Ryan Watt (broken hand) and the team’s leading scorer, freshman Sage Burmeister (foot injury),” LJCD head coach Ryan Meier said.
