Menehune Surf Contest hits La Jolla The 10th annual Menehune Surf Contest for youths 18 and under will take place April 17 at La Jolla Shores, beginning at 7 a.m. Participants can enter the longboard, shortboard or novice brackets, which are each divided by age group and gender. There is also a Super Menehune event for children six years and younger that is not judged and a “Moms of Groms” contest for surfing mothers who have a child in the competition. The cost to participate is $55 per division and $30 for each additional division. Contestants must enter by April 12. Tritons women’s point guard named all-American UCSD sophomore point guard Chelsea Carlisle was named to the 2010 NCAA Division II State Farm Coaches all-American Team. Carlisle was one of 10 selected to the first team and was the only underclassmen selected. Carlisle was a big part of UCSD’s 25-5 campaign in 2009-2010, averaging team highs with 17.4 points, 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The all-America honor adds to her trophy collection this season, including California Collegiate Athletic Association MVP and West Region Player of the Year. UCSD names new women’s VB coach UCSD named Ricci Luyties head coach of the Tritons women’s volleyball team. Luyties is the sixth head coach in program history, replacing Tom Black, who left in January to become head coach at Loyola Marymount. Luyties spent the last six seasons as head coach at Southern Mississippi, leading the Golden Eagles to a 27-5 record and their first ever Conference USA title last season. He has also served as an assistant coach at Colorado and spent time as coach of the boys and girls varsity teams at La Jolla High School.
