One season has ended for a collegian with local ties, while another’s continues on.
Candice Wiggins (La Jolla Country Day School) and the Stanford Lady Cardinal women’s basketball team saw their season end March 27 with a 62-59 loss to LSU in the finals of the San Antonio Regional. LSU moved on to the Final Four in Boston.
Wiggins paced Stanford with 23 points on the evening.
On the softball diamond, pitcher Lisa Dodd (University City High) is a having a great season on the mound for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) women’s softball team.
Dodd entered action this week with a 14-1 record for UCLA (33-3). She has added on offense too, driving in 23 runs and providing 24 hits.
Columbia University senior Maia Chard-Yaron (La Jolla Country Day School) threw her first collegiate no-hitter, completing the Lions’ doubleheader sweep of Fairfield recently. Chard-Yaron faced the minimum over seven innings, striking out three and only allowing two walks, both of which were erased on the bases one batter later.
Chard-Yaron has also been getting it done at the plate, having hit safely in all six games during the week, extending her hitting streak to nine. From the leadoff spot, she batted .381 with four runs scored, two stolen bases, two sacrifices and an RBI, as Columbia went 4-1-1.
Joey Boyle (University City High) has helped Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) to a current 30-10 record on the baseball diamond.
Boyle, a sophomore infielder, has driven in 12 runs to date for the Sea Lions.
Joe Oliveira (University City High) is a catcher for the University of Pacific baseball team.
Oliveira had four hits and an RBI to date for the Tigers, who posted a 17-11 record as of last weekend.
