Marissa Bartello made sure no one would think her performance in the 3000m steeplechase from the other week was a fluke as she topped her own mark and the Point Loma women’s track and field school record with a time of 10:54. 31 in the event at the California Collegiate Invitational in La Jolla on Saturday, April 2.
That time shattered her previous time of 11:09.68 and earned her an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard by more than 10 seconds. Bartello’s time moved her to fourth on the 2016 NCAA Division II Performance List. She used a competitive racing field to pace her performance over the 3000m and finish second in the race. She was the only freshman in the field. Bartello joins fellow freshman Celine Lum as the first two Sea Lions to earn NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standards. Lum earned her’s in the pole vault.
The 4x100m relay team of Lauren Levenson, Hannah Cain, Morgan Brandt and Ashley Julio posted the Sea Lions best performance of the year in the race with a time of 49.72 to place fourth at the meet.
Levenson also hit a personal record in the high jump by clearing 5-2.25 (1.58m).
