Piles of trash a valuable lesson at PB Middle International Baccalaureate (IB) students with Pacific Beach Middle School’s Ecology Club have been inspired to take care of the earth, organizing a number of lunchtime activities leading up to Earth Day last Friday. Among the activities, the campus was invited to place lunchtime trash on a huge tarp. The purpose was to expose students to how much trash is generated in one lunch period. After gathering the trash, student volunteers from science and design technology classes donned rubber gloves to investigate. To top off Earth Week, students held a “Garden Harvest” event at the PB Middle Waves of Green student garden on April 22. Students picked enough lettuce, peas, broccoli and beets to make salads for all participants to sample the garden’s fresh, organic “bounty at the beach.” The school’s Ecology Club has also started composting to keep the garden growing and have started a recycling program. Pacific Beach Middle School is located at 4676 Ingraham St. For more information, call (858) 273-9070, ext. 2357, or email [email protected].
