A reported 108,000 gallon sewage spill was identified Sunday, Jan. 10 in Tecolote Canyon, which subsequently impacted Tecolote Creek and the eastern portion of Mission Bay from the Fiesta Island land bridge north to the Visitors’ Center at Clairemont Drive. Samples collected by the Department of Environmental Health to assess the extent of sewage impacts indicates that sewage has migrated to the north. As a result, the water contact closure has been extended north to include the East Mission Bay boat launch, the northern portion of Fiesta Island, and the Campland shoreline. Water quality samples will continue to be collected daily from Tecolote Creek and potentially impacted areas of east Mission Bay to monitor the extent of sewage impacts. Signs warning of sewage contamination have been posted at various access points along Tecolote Creek and affected beaches in east Mission Bay and will remain in place until samples confirm that water is no longer impacted with sewage.
