New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and his wife were awarded over $6.1 million in damages June 21 in a lawsuit filed against La Jolla jeweler Vahid Moradi. After two days of deliberations, a San Diego Superior Court jury found Moradi liable for Brees’ claim that he sold the couple $15 million in diamonds for far more than their actual value, according to CBS 8. 

The purchases took place between 2012 and 2016. Moradi claimed to be an expert in acquiring investment-grade diamonds, but an independent appraiser told the couple in 2017 that the diamonds were worth $6.7 million less than what they had paid. 

One of the diamond rings in question Moradi sold Brees and his wife for $8.1 million. It was actually worth only $3.75 million. Another Moradi claimed was from Europe, but was really purchased from a dealer in Orange County. 

Brees wasn’t present for the verdict reading but did testify early on in the trial.
