Pianist Nat Adderley Jr., who performs at Tango Del Rey on April 24, first rose to prominence in 1981 as music arranger for singer Luther Vandross. These days, he performs jazz with his quintet, part of a family dynasty that includes his father, trumpeter Nat Adderley, and his uncle, saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. The music’s focus is on the piano. But this is a top-notch combo with virtuoso performances from bassist Ricky Ravallo, drummer Vaughn Hall, saxophonist Diron Holloway and cornet player Longineu Parsons. If you like jazz in the tradition of the classic Blue Note era, this is the week’s best bet.
