Spring is here, and there’s no better way to celebrate the start of a new season than by updating your home decor. The La Jolla Village News recently chatted with local resident and interior designer Tracy Lynn — owner of Tracy Lynn Studio — about new spring trends and how to refresh your home for the season.
In keeping with the longstanding tradition fo spring cleaning, Lynn said minimalism is the way to go. Use the “magical art of tidying up” to put away items that made you happy during winter, but serve little purpose this season.
“Say goodbye to fuzzy blankets and say hello to the outdoors and sunshine,” she said.
Bring the outdoors inside with floral fabrics and wallpapers in trendy colors like “hunter greens, pinks, and earthy mushroom hues,” along with natural textures that, according to Lynn, “make you feel more connected to nature.” Options include jute, cotton, and wool.
Traditional dark wood floors are also out, with more and more people requesting light wood floors to bring a freshness to their home design.
“Light wood floors reflect the brightness of spring and make the days feel even longer,” she said.
In contrast, Lynn said darker kitchen cabinet colors, like black, are a big trend this season because they give rooms a “sleeker and more sophisticated look.”
“Design is an evolving process and every few years the pendulum shifts directions,” she said. “People are starting to think outside the box of the classic white kitchen and are moving in the opposite direction with darker statement pieces that add a bit of drama.”
“Believe it or not black is a neutral color that can be layered into any space creating a blended balance. It is versatile in its look from seaside or French cottage to a clean modern simple space.”
Lynn, who has been an interior designer for over 17 years, takes a holistic approach to create a home that “takes the grander scheme of things into consideration.” In addition to improving the look of a room, Lynn’s designers make sure it’s functional and that everything has a place.
“We ask our clients to take us through a typical day in the life of their home, to see how every family member uses each space. This insight allows us to create a home that is, above all else, functional in addition to being beautiful.”
While updating your home for spring might not be at the tippy-top of your to-do list, Lynn said it helps to add a personal touch when welcoming any new season.
“Just as we see signs of the changing seasons in nature, our home gives us an opportunity to set a more personal tone for the season,” Lynn said. “It’s nice to have physical cues that help us prepare us for what’s to come; whether it’s the addition of some cozy chunky knit throws to your family room for winter nights or new throw pillows that reflect the positive glow of spring, these signs get us in the spirit of the season.”
