A Celebration of Grass Roots Oasis will take place at the venue on Dec. 13. The event is a fundraiser for the combination meeting spot and concert hall, with some of San Diego’s favorite performers playing in acoustic mode. Running from 6 to 9:30 p.m., quick sets will be the order of the day with an excellent roster of talent that includes: Cindy Lee Berryhill, Jeff Berkley, Kimm Rogers, Lisa Sanders with Brown Sugar, Nena Anderson and Calamity with Cathryn Beeks and Nisha Cantron. Grass Roots Oasis is a vital component of the local arts community, this concert is a great opportunity to do a good deed, while taking in an evening of headline entertainment. Musician, producer, author, DJ and raconteur Jon Kanis performs at Grass Roots Oasis on Dec. 2. The night will be in honor of the release of Kanis’ latest album, “Fundamentalism Is the Only Way,” which is to be performed in its entirety by an all-star band featuring guitarist Christopher Hoffee, bassist Roger Morrison, violinist Jamie Shadowlight, drummer Brad Smith and special guests. Kanis’ music is a heartfelt mix of folk, rock ’n’ roll, punk attitude and deft wordplay, so fans of the adventurous side of music will enjoy every second of sounds from this show’s great mix of musicians. Anyone questioning the vitality of today’s rock ’n’ roll scene will want to check out young rockers, The Bassics, at the 710 Beach Club on Dec. 2. Winners of the “Best New Artist” category at the 2014 San Diego Music Awards, and now firm Southern California concert favorites, the band excels at a brash mix of punk and powerpop, with plenty of melody to go with their manic energy. The Bassics debut album will be released this spring, sure to capture some of the band’s magic, but this is a band that should be experienced live.

The Music Department of Mission Bay High School will host their annual Winter Concert on Dec. 8. Helmed by music director JP Balmat, all of the school’s groups will take part in the show including their Wind Ensemble, Choir and String Orchestra, as well as the Mambo Orchestra and acclaimed jazz group, the Preservationists. This concert is a great chance to hear some of the hottest young musical talent in San Diego, and also help the school’s musicians themselves. All funds raised by this concert go directly to help continue the school’s musical program.

Dance band Y3K performs at Humphreys Backstage Live on Dec. 9. The group specializes in crowd pleasers, playing hits from the 1960s to today. In fact that’s one of the six-piece bands greatest strengths, plenty of bands perform the hits of the ’60s and ’70s, but far fewer continue their set lists into the 1980s and today. It all adds up to a night of music that can be quite eclectic, including songs from the likes of the Beach Boys, New Order and Pitbull. Y3K is a veritable living jukebox, who truly offers up something for just about everybody. Big band fans will want to check out the JazzKatz Orchestra when they perform at Dizzy’s on Dec. 9. The 14-piece combo, which includes such top flight musicians as saxophonist Chris Klich, trumpeter Paull Seaforth and bassist Jodie Hill, will be joined by singer Allison Adams Tucker for a show that will feature a mix of seasonal favorites and genre classics, perfect for listening or dancing. Tunes will include such beloved tunes as Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time is Here” from the TV-classic, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Mel Torme’s “Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and other holiday standards.
