
Following conclusion of the regular winter season, the San Diego CIF section announced playoff pairings for four Point Loma team sports, while girls water polo playoffs came to an end.
In boys soccer, the Pointers (9-6-5) were seeded No. 7 in the elite Open Division. They began play this week at No. 2 Canyon Crest (13-6-4). Semifinals are Feb. 19 with finals Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Mission Bay High.
In girls soccer, the Pointers (8-13-4) were the No. 8 seed in Div. I. They hosted No. 9 Steele Canyon (8-13-3) Feb. 13. Quarterfinals are Feb. 16, semifinals Feb. 20 and finals Feb. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Mission Bay High.
Boys basketball (16-9) is the No. 12 seed in Div. II and played at No. 5 Olympian (18-8) on Feb. 13. Quarterfinals are Feb. 16, semifinals Feb. 20 and finals Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at UC San Diego.
Girls basketball finds the Lady Pointers (16-9) as No. 6 seed in Div. III. They hosted No. 11 La Jolla (10-13) Feb. 12. Quarterfinals are Feb. 15, semifinals Feb. 19 with finals Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Mira Mesa High.
In girls water polo, the Pointers began defense of their 2018 Div. III championship after being moved up to Div. II for 2019. Following a 10-0 Central League championship season (15-3 overall) they were seeded No. 5 and defeated No. 12 Classical Academy 10-2 in the first round.
In the quarterfinals, the Pointers jumped to a quick 2-0 lead over No. 4 Eastlake before the Titans rallied to tie the score at 4-4 late in the game. With ball possession in the final minute and after calling a timeout to set up a play, the Titans scored to claim a 5-4 victory and eliminate Point Loma.
Top scorers for the team were seniors Veronika Divis, Aja Whittaker and Katherine Power, junior Eloise Lubsen and freshman Summer Nelson. Goaltender Alexia Stroud made more than 100 saves.
