Sara Kim recently opened a new yogurt shop on Herschel Avenue that boasts healthy treats for visitors and locals.
“I thought this is the best place for the shop because of the healthy minds in La Jolla,” said Kim of Applegreen Yogurt. “The concept we are trying to make is that it is a tasty dessert with no fat and lower calories.”
Although owners recently opened the store, Kim said she hopes to expand her products in the wintertime to cater to coffee connoisseurs.
Many of Kim’s current customers sit and read or use their computers, she said. Kim said she caters to her customer’s needs, closing later and opening earlier.
“My plan for winter is I think we’re going to add coffee and gourmet pastry desserts,” Kim said. “We’re going to order every morning ” everything we sell is going to be gourmet. We will have grind and brew gourmet and organic coffee.”
Applegreen Yogurt is the first store its investors hope to use as their flagship, according to Kim.
She experimented to find the perfect ingredients to make the first four flavors now available: Plain Tart, Applegreen, blackberry and peach-mango.
“We have fresh fruit we cut every day and dry toppings, too,” store employee Luiza Krause said. “I just washed the berries ” all are fresh.”
Kim said the store offers fresh smoothies, although she didn’t expect the drinks to be so popular. She also features a 28-grain powder or the antioxidant Acai berry.
“Acai is a Brazilian berry very high in protein, and we sell a lot of it. We added it at the beginning and got a good response. It looks like a blueberry but tastes like a blackberry,” Kim said.
Customers can drink a healthy smoothie, or they can go for a sweeter version, Krause said. She recommended the peanut butter and chocolate smoothie.
“There’s a lot of yogurt shops, but mine is a little different because I try to be healthier,” Kim said.
During the summertime, Applegreen Yogurt, 1044 Wall St., No. E (entrance on Herschel Ave.), opens by 11:30 a.m. and closes after 10 p.m. For information, call (858) 551-0654.
