A number of local scholastic basketball teams have hit the tourney hardwood over the last week.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights dropped their first game of the season after nine straight wins, 64-58, to San Diego High last Friday.
Michelle Brunker (14 points) and Elaina White (12) paced the Bishop’s attack.
Bishop’s is participating this week in the West Coast Jamboree.
La Jolla High opened play last week in the Crawford Tournament with a 36-24 victory over Valhalla.
With the win, La Jolla raised its record to 3-5 on the season. Natallia Cravens led the way with 10 points.
La Jolla dropped its next two tourney games, with losses to Crawford (43-20) and Orange Glen (42-36). Olivia Waldon had 13 points in the loss to Orange Glen.
On the boys side, Bishop’s scored a 70-42 win over Cathedral last Friday in Kiwanis Tournament action.
Jywrell Wilson led the way with 32 points for the Knights, with Malik Love adding 15.
Meantime, La Jolla High finished a strong third place in the Kiwanis tournament.
After trailing most of the second half in the first round against Morse, La Jolla came back and stole the game in double overtime, 81-76.
Peter Sefton led the balanced Viking attack with 30 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Jerrell Agnew with 18 points and four assists; Taylor Davis, 11 points; Spencer Moyer, 10 points and five rebounds; and Matt Jones, nine points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
In the second round, the Vikings played their best game of the season in dominating a good Division I Rancho Buena Vista team, 53-34.
The team effort on the stifling Viking full-court press was the highlight of the game. Agnew led the Vikes in scoring with 13 points. Davis had 11 points and five rebounds, and Jones nine points and seven rebounds.
In the semifinals, the Vikings suffered their worst defeat of the season, 52-29, to Torrey Pines, the second-ranked team in San Diego County.
The Vikings used their press and transition attack to jump out to a 13-9 first-quarter lead, but Torrey Pines’ size advantage and the 23 points of James Rahon dominated the Vikings the rest of the game.
In the battle for third place last Saturday night, La Jolla continued last season’s dominance over an improved Cathedral team, 66-56.
Sefton, who was named to the Kiwanis All-Tournament Team, took control inside with 21 points and 10 rebounds, assisted by Agnew with 12 points, Moyer (12), Jones (10) and Samir Ramnabaja with eight points and a hustling defensive effort.
The University City High boys team ran its record to 8-2 last week with a 55-50 victory over Grossmont.
David Washington tallied 23 points to lead the Centurions.
In girls action, Tiffini Britt scored 17 points for University City High (6-5) in a 53-35 victory over El Cajon Valley.
