Gridders stay on a roll

The Bishop’s School football team just keeps rolling and rolling.
Bishop’s raised its record to 6-0 last weekend with a 43-0 win over St. Monica’s.
Running back Michael Strauss opened the scoring with a 15-yard TD run. Outside linebacker Will Peck then intercepted a Mariner pass on the 10-yard line and ran it in, as the rout was on.
Mike P. Jensen added a 20-yard TD pass from QB Tim Costello and a one-yard run to make the score 27-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Strauss opened the second quarter with a nine-yard run. Wide receiver Saron Hood then caught a 27-yard pass from Costello. Bishop’s added a safety to close out the scoring.
The Mariners did not get a first down until the middle of the third quarter.
“We must continue to play great defense this week against Horizon,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David said. “They are a very dangerous team.”
Elsewhere, La Jolla High was able to score twice in the fourth quarter to win a very tight defensive struggle in a 10-7 win at Lincoln.
La Jolla’s defensive coordinator Rey Hernandez used the bye week to formulate a defensive plan that was able to shut out the speedy Hornets through the first three quarters.
The only serious Lincoln threat was on its first drive, when the Hornets drove the ball to the La Jolla 8-yard line. An interception by junior defensive back Yosi Rothman prevented the Hornets from scoring.
The La Jolla offense had trouble moving the ball for the first three quarters, but the defense was given good field position by junior punter Ethan Swedlow’s five first-half punts that averaged 39 yards each.
As the fourth quarter began, the Vikings were able to take advantage of a short Hornet punt and start a drive on Lincoln’s 45-yard line.
Led by the running of senior backs Jerrell Agnew and Ja’Rodd Watson, the Vikings moved the ball 30 yards, setting up the first score of the evening. Junior placekicker Lee Abelkop drilled a 35-yard field goal to give La Jolla a 3-0 lead.
Lincoln responded to the Viking score on the very next drive.
After taking the kickoff back close to midfield, the Hornets were able to cap off their drive with a three-yard run by Wes Conley. The PAT gave Lincoln a 7-3 lead with a bit over five minutes left in the game.
When La Jolla got the ball back, junior returner Daniel Juarez took a short Lincoln kickoff and returned the ball to the Viking 49-yard line.
On first down, Agnew followed great blocks by seniors offensive linemen Mike Gartman and Kevin Leyva to break into the Lincoln defensive backfield and sprint to a 51-yard touchdown. Abelkop’s PAT reclaimed the lead for the Vikings at 10-7.
After stopping Lincoln on offense, La Jolla got the ball back with three minutes left in the game. Behind the running of Agnew and Watson, La Jolla was able to gain a first down and milk the clock down to one second left before turning the ball over to Lincoln.
Lincoln had time for one last play, but Watson, who was playing defensive end, sacked the quarterback to give his team the victory.
La Jolla’s defense was led by Watson’s nine tackles and a sack, Tony Sandoval’s 11 tackles and Thomas Bowman’s five tackles, with a sack and a caused fumble. Defensive back Kevin Miller finished the evening with five tackles.
Agnew finished the evening with 123 yards on 24 carries, while Watson gained 54 yards on eight carries.
“It was important to get our first league win,” La Jolla High head coach Dave Ponsford said. “Rey’s defense and our special teams were the difference in the game. I think that we were in better shape than Lincoln, and we were able to move the ball on them late in the game to score enough points for the victory.”
La Jolla is home this weekend to meet Mission Bay for Homecoming at 7 p.m.
La Jolla’s junior varsity remained undefeated for the season with a 14-0 victory over Lincoln.
Sophomore quarterback Zac Zlatic was able to connect with sophomore tight end Taylor Davis for a 10-yard scoring pass.
Elsewhere, sophomore Montell Allen had a monster game to help his La Jolla Country Day team even its record at 3-3, topping Tri-City Christian 54-0 in a Pacific League opener for both teams.
Allen scored the first two touchdowns of the game: a first-quarter score coming on a five-yard run followed by a 40-yard screen pass from Derek Hatfield.
On top of his tremendous offensive output, Allen led all Torrey tacklers from his linebacker position, finishing the game with 13 stops. In addition to Allen’s two scores, two field goals by Travis Golia (22 and 32 yards) had the Torreys up 20-0 at the half.
Tommy Morris played the best quarter of football of his career as he dominated the third quarter to put the Eagles from Vista away for good.
Morris wasted no time getting the second half rolling the Torreys’ way, taking the half’s opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.
On the Torreys’ second possession of the half, Morris hauled in a 21-yard Hatfield pass for his second touchdown.
Morris was not through yet ” on the Torreys’ fourth possession of the half, he scored his third TD of the quarter on a 65-yard reception from Hatfield. Morris had a hand in a fourth TD late in the game when he threw a 48-yard screen pass to Mike Salas.
Morris led all LJCD receivers with five catches for 120 yards and three scores. Hatfield completed 16 of 25 passes for 268 yards and three TDs. Cody Maxwell led all Torrey rushers with 57 yards and one TD.
Along with Allen, fellow inside linebacker Maxwell had double-digit tackles, picking up 10 with three solos.
LJCD returns to action Friday, when it hosts Escondido Charter at 7 p.m.
LJCD’s junior varsity team raised its record to 4-1-1 by blanking Tri-City 34-0.
Finally, University City High dropped a 26-10 decision to Coronado.
UC scored its points on a 29-yard field goal from Kyle Berner and a 27-yard TD pass from Skyler Dougherty to Marcus Gibson.
