Airport boasts contemporary artworks SAN DIEGO — The San Diego International Airport Art Program opened its newest exhibition space in Terminal 2, post-security near Gate 22, with an exhibit called “Floating in Space” by Cathy Breslaw, a San Diego artist. Breslaw created organic-shaped wall, floor and suspended art installations through the inventive manipulation of industrial mesh, beads, thread, yarn and rope. Inspiration for this exhibit came from the artist’s travels around the world. Passengers leaving and arriving from Gate 22 will have the opportunity to experience this exhibit featuring sculptural pieces that suspend and dance from the ceiling as well as others that appear to float on the wall. The exhibit is on display now through March 15, 2011. For more information visit www.art.san.org. Sacred Heart Academy students to host canned food drive OCEAN BEACH — Sacred Heart Academy and parishioners of Sacred Heart Church of Ocean Beach will invite the community to participate in a canned food drive on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Appletree Market. The event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., takes place at the church, located at 4949 Santa Monica Ave. between Bacon and Cable streets. Proceeds will benefit Sacred Heart Church’s Loaves and Fishes program, offsetting the cost of feeding the local homeless every other Tuesday. With the holidays quickly approaching, church members are asking the community to help reach out and help the ongoing efforts of students of Sacred Heart Academy to touch the lives of those less fortunate. For more information, call (619) 222-7252, or visit www.s-h-a.org. Run/walk to benefit PLHS cross-country programs POINT LOMA — Peninsula residents and families will join a 5K run/walk to benefit the Point Loma High School (PLHS) cross-country teams next month. Known as “Galadash,” the event begins at 8 a.m. on Nov. 13 and is being held in conjunction with the 85th anniversary celebration of PLHS that evening at Liberty Station. Both the 5K event and a shorter one-mile version will begin and end at the school stadium on Voltaire Street. Persons with strollers are welcome, and the 60 members of the boys and girls’ cross-country teams will be on hand to lend support and encouragement. For a minimum donation of $10, participants will receive an event T-shirt (subject to supply). Larger donations and contributions are also encouraged, according to members of the team’s parent Booster Club. A raffle will also be conducted. The Booster Club is part of the school’s Pointer Association, a 501(c)3 organization. For more information or to make donations, e-mail [email protected]. — Scott Hopkins Community gets crafty with holiday spirit
PACIFIC BEACH — The holidays are just around the corner and that can entail many shopping days spent sitting in traffic, searching for parking and fighting fellow last-minute shoppers. However, local community groups have worked together to give residents a holiday shopping alternative this year. The Pacific Beach Woman’s Club (PBWC), with the help of the Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) and the support of the Pacific Beach Recreation Center, will host the annual Pacific Beach Fall Festival and Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the recreation center, 1405 Diamond St. An assortment of handcrafted goods will line not only the gym, but also the basketball court outside. The vendors will include jewelers, crafters, bakers and quilters. There will even be a woman selling homemade tamales. The event will have a bounce house, balloons and face painters for children. The majority of the vendors are from the local area, but some are from as far away as Escondido and Temecula. A used book sale will take place throughout the day and offer a variety of choices. — Debbie Hatch It’s all Happening! Marc & Darlynne Menkin DOWNTOWN — The holiday season is one of the most special times of the year in downtown San Diego. In Little Italy, there’s a unique event called Kettner Nights that’s held the second Friday of every other month. About a dozen art galleries and design-related businesses along Kettner Boulevard and India Street in the Art & Design District will be open Friday, Nov. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free to the public and some of the locations serve beverages and snacks. Photographer Nick Abadilla, who has participated in Kettner Nights the last five years, said it provides wonderful exposure for local artists. “The community needs to see and appreciate the homegrown creativity right in our own town,” Abadillo said. “Plus, it’s invigorating to gain a sense of the creative process. Often, I think, it can spark new ideas and opportunities for both the attendees and the artists.” — Marc & Darlynne Menkin Friday, Nov. 12
