
The tally is in and winners in three different categories – Design and Improvement, New Business, and Heart of PB – were announced at Discover PB’s annual dinner awards and casino night gala March 29.
This year’s winners:
n Outstanding Volunteer, Tim Pruesener, iCatch Marketing;
n Community Partner, James McGuirk, formerly of Councilmember Zapf’s office;
n Mike Duran Community Spirit Award, Andie LaComb;
n Community Patron, Ty Hauter, Good Time Design;
n New Business of the Year, The Grass Skirt;
n Design and Improvement, Better Buzz Pacific Beach West;
n Heart of PB award, Pernicano’s Family Restaurant (with more than 70 years in business, John Pernicano was there to accept this well-deserved award despite having recent surgery).
Announced in early January, award nominees, posted on the Discover PB website and social media outlets, are voted on by the public to determine the winners. Winners were announced aboard the William B. Evans Sternwheeler at the Catamaran Resort Hotel.
“Discover PB would not be able to accomplish all that it does without the volunteers that make it all possible,” said Discover PB executive director Sara Berns. “The annual dinner and awards is a chance to recognize those people.”

Heart of PB winner Pernicano’s, representing staying power, resilience and innovation, will now be submitted to the Small Business Association and the BID council to represent PB in a citywide competition for Business of the Year.
Recent winners of the New Business award include: Randall’s Sandals (2017), Order Up (2016), Iron Pig Alehouse (2015), and The Baked Bear (2014).
Recent winners of the Design and Improvement award include: Pueblo (2017), Backyard Kitchen and Tap (2016), The Point at Ingraham (2015), and The Patio on Lamont (2014).
Recent winners of the Heart of PB award include: Yogurt on the Rocks (2017), Turquoise Coffee/Cellars (2016), PB Shore Club (2015) and San Diego Surf School (2014).
