Four Point Loma High tennis players, four years of varsity play, four Eastern League team championships. That’s the legacy senior foursome Dominic Gareri, Avery Cramer, Kasey Dring and Forrest Young will leave behind to motivate their returning teammates. The Pointer boys’ tennis team wrapped up its league season with a perfect 12-0 record (15-1 overall). Years of domination created some awkward moments during the league’s singles championship match when two Pointer teammates faced each other in the finals after eliminating other challengers. Gareri and Cramer, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, battled for honors, with Gareri victorious by scores of 7-5 and 6-3. In the third-place match, No. 3 seed Kasey Dring of PLHS lost to No. 4 seed Santiago Pinon of San Diego High. In Eastern League doubles, Pointer seniors Trenton Saunders and John Paul DeFreitas took fifth place with a 6-4 and 7-6 victory over their Serra High opponents. In CIF team play, the Pointers drew a No. 4 seed in Div. II. They defeated first-round opponent Olympian High 13-5. In the second round, the Pointers played to a 9-9 tie with Ramona High, the Pointers advancing by way of a 74-58 edge in games won. In the third round, the Pointers traveled to La Jolla to face the No. 1 seed Vikings, who handed the Pointers a 15-3 defeat. La Jolla is chasing its state-record 44th CIF team championship. Gareri, Cramer and Dring, along with the Saunders-DeFreitas doubles team, qualified for the CIF individual tournament, which begins Monday, May 20 at the Barnes Tennis Center, 4490 West Point Loma Blvd. NET NOTES • Gareri’s nickname is “Dom,” as in “domination.” This was the senior’s third consecutive Eastern League singles title. • Tennis coach Mark Truver loses eight of his team’s 12 players to graduation this year.
