A pair of local scholastic boys volleyball teams look to net success this season.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings under head coach Dave Jones opened the season in Maui, finishing second in the Gold Division behind the strong play of Dillon Lesniak (outside hitter), Matt Jones (outside hitter), Alex Reynolds (middle blocker), Julian Devilmorin (Libero) and Max Greenberg (setter). Jones was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
La Jolla will see action this spring in two other tourneys: the Beach City Invitational and the Redondo Power Classic.
In action last week, La Jolla upset Westview 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 15-8. Jones was the kill leader (22), followed by Lesniak (14). The assist leaders were Tyler Heap and Greenberg.
The Vikings also saw strong defense in the back row from John Walsh, who finished the match with 15 digs.
With the wins, La Jolla improved to 5-1 overall. Western League play will start after Easter for the Vikings.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights went 14-11 a season ago, losing in the CIF semifinals to San Marcos.
Key returnees this season for new head coach Rob Landis include David Stotelmyre, Corey Malkiewicz and Marcus Montanile.
The team is athletic and the key reportedly will be finding setting to complement the attacking.
Assistant coach Teodora Kamenova said the team plays with their hearts and souls in practices, with little entertaining injected.
“It is a pleasure for me to work with them,” Kamenova said. “Everybody has something special to bring to the team.”
Bishop’s was slated to face Coronado and Hilltop in action this week.
