PENINSULA WINDS MUSIC SHOW SET FOR APRIL 15 The Point Loma High School gymnasium will be alive with the beat of the drums, the bells of the brass and many other wind instruments as three public schools and a university join together for the 24th annual Peninsula Winds concert on Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
Guests are invited to see the progression of outstanding student musicians, which include fifth- and sixth-graders under the direction of Ruben Flores at Dana Middle School; Marc Dwyer’s junior high band students from Correia; James Sepulvedo’s Point Loma High School musicians; and Point Loma Nazarene University music students under the direction of John Dally. The event features short performances from each of these award-winning bands. They will come together with a combined energetic closing number in a free concert. Concessions will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium, located at 2335 Chatsworth Blvd.

The local Thursday Club is gearing up for a gala event on Friday, April 25 to benefit Promises2Kids, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting foster children in the local community. The event is scheduled to take place at the Thursday Club’s clubhouse in Point Loma, and will feature dinner, music and a live auction. Proceeds from the gala will go to support Camp Connect, a life-changing Promises2Kids program that ensures brothers and sisters separated through the foster-care system stay connected throughout the year. The mission of Camp Connect is to keep the family bond. Promises2Kids annually provides more than 3,300 current and former foster youth in San Diego County with the tools, opportunities and guidance they need to address the circumstances that brought them into foster care, overcome the difficulties of their past and grow into healthy, successful adults. In 2013, 460 children were able to reconnect with their siblings through Camp Connect. With community support, organizers hope all foster children separated from their siblings will be able to attend Camp Connect.
To help get the gala going, event organizers are asking for help from local merchants and residents.
Here are the ways you can participate in the run-up to the benefit event:
• Donate an item or service to the Thursday Club online and/or its live auction. The online auction alone is expected to reach a multitude of viewers through the Bidding For Good website. Organizers said this type of exposure is sure to bring donors new, prospective patrons for future clientele bases.
• Financially sponsor the event. Examples of financial support include cash donations, table sponsorships and in-kind donations (such as food, beverages, printing, equipment and staffing volunteers). To help, visit www.thethursday-club.org. You can also connect through Facebook at www.facebook.com/The-ThursdayClubJuniors?ref=hl .
The Thursday Club was founded in 1921 to promote social, educational, cultural and civic activities throughout San Diego County. Each year, the Thursday Club Juniors support their heritage of philanthropy by planning a gala event. Since the group’s founding, the Thursday Club has raised nearly $2 million to support local charities. Past beneficiaries include Special Delivery San Diego, San Diego Food Bank, Boys to Men Mentoring, San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation and ARTS — A Reason to Survive. Funds raised by Thursday Club Juniors have helped to transform many local charities, enabling them to better serve our community and help where it is needed most.
