Presented by Scripp’s Institution of Oceanography’s Dr. Amber Pairis, the award was presented at the 2019 San Diego Climate Summit, which featured local researchers and climate leaders sharing key insights from California’s 4th Climate Change Assessment and The San Diego Regional Report.

– The school’s auditorium was filled with more than 200 students and their families engaging in fun and interactive science activities. This year’s theme, “The Science of Magic,” revealed that simple scientific concepts can be observed and implemented anywhere, anytime, and with magical results. Parent volunteers joined experts from the Fleet Science Center, Point Loma Nazarene University, the Audubon Society, the League of Extraordinary Scientists, and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research to bring 18 hands-on science stations to the event. Participants recreated the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, visualized the DNA of a living organism by looking at its banding patterns on a gel, created electricity using simple materials like magnets and copper, and so much more. “The best part of science night was when we shrunk marshmallows in a vacuum chamber,” said first grader David V., who spent half his time at science night at the PLNU vacuum chamber station. “It was like magic because we turned the marshmallow big and small.”  Crown Point
– “Seas the Night” dinner and silent auction will take place 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. To purchase tickets, visit friendsofcpjma.com/auction2019/. FOPBSS
