• St. Paul’s Lutheran School, 1376 Felspar St., will hold an open house Jan. 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. St. Paul’s includes grades K through 8. For more information, see www.stpaulspb.com or call (858) 272-6282. • Pacific Beach Middle will host its annual Math and Science Night tonight, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Media Center. The Math Department will have fun, fast-paced games for students and parents to play. Science teachers will feature their hands-on, student-produced projects which the children have completed so far this school year. The STARLAB planetarium will be a highlight of the evening. This enormous, inflatable planetarium will let students see a clear night sky — indoors. • Mission Bay High School (MBHS) will receive nearly $40,000 for technology to enhance its graphic/website design program, thanks to theJimmie Johnson Foundation and its sponsor Lowes. Jimmie Johnson, an El Cajon native and winner of five straight NASCAR championships, gave nearly $420,000 to programs in and around San Diego. MBHS will purchase state-of-the-art computers and software, and upgrading its coursework in the fields of website design and communications with the funds. Johnson hosts a charity golf tournament, dinner and auction in San Diego County to benefit his foundation each year. • On Friday, Feb. 4, Pacific Beach Middle School (PBMS) will inaugurate its school spelling bee. Fifty-one seventh- and eighth-grade students will compete for the opportunity to represent PBMS at the San Diego County Spelling Bee. The county winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the televised Scripps National Spelling Bee. These 51 students have been chosen as the best spellers in their classrooms, and earned the right to compete in the schoolwide bee. Parents and the public are invited to attend the Pacific Beach Middle School Spelling Bee at the PBMS auditorium Feb. 4 at 8 a.m.
