Ebers-Greene ‘monstrosity’ torn down

Work began Aug. 14 on a remodel of the three-story, boarded-up Ebers-Greene project at 2269 Ebers St., which some have referred to as a “monstrosity.”
Reports are that the property, now owned by Irving-based Center Street Lending, failed to attract a buyer at a foreclosure auction this spring.
Center City has since made a scope change to the project permit calling for a complete remodel to the residence’s first and second floors, as well constructing a new roof deck.
In November 2017, the City sent a Notice of Abatement to then-owner Nelco Properties, LLC, informing them their abandoned building at 2269 Ebers had been inspected by the City’s Code Enforcement Division and the Development Services Department which determined the building was abandoned and that it “contained enough threats to the public’s health and safety to constitute a public nuisance.”
The City notice further directed “immediate actions” to clean up and secure the site of the then-abandoned building.
Nelco purchased the four-bedroom, two-bath home, built in 1927, for $645,000 in 2015. It is five blocks from Dog Beach and nine blocks from Newport Avenue.
