Boy Scout Matt Gray is rolling up his sleeves to install 40 native plants, remove weeds and build a kiosk on an embankment on the west side of Rose Creek this weekend, June 20-21. Gray said the goal of the project is to return the area to its natural ecosystem and that the project is an extension of the work Friends of Rose Creek has done in the area. “Our goal is to recreate the creek’s natural habitat so that the native birds of the area will return to the location,” Gray said. The Boy Scout will plant black sage, lemonade berry and California sage brush. The 67 feet by 17 feet plot of land Gray selected for the project is located behind Rose Creek Cottage at the start of the service road that joins the parking lot. Gray will build the four-foot wide kiosk near the beginning of the embankment that will display information from Friends of Rose Creek. Gray said J.P. Witherow Roofing Company on Morena Boulevard donated all the necessary roofing supplies for the kiosk. Gray worked with Friends of Rose Creek volunteer Karin Zirk on the project. “I am so excited and impressed by a 17-year-old putting this much effort into improving the community,” Zirk said. Gray lives near Rose Creek and got the idea to do his Eagle Scout project there after driving by the creek one day. He started planning the project in February. “I know about Rose Creek and that there have been different projects to try and clean it up,” he said. “We were passing it one day and thought there might be a project there. Gray completed his junior year at La Jolla High School on June 15 and is a member of Troop 506, based in La Jolla. He has been a member of the Boy Scouts for six years. Gray will work on the project on June 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on June 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gray’s Boy Scout troop and friends will help with the project, and Gray invites the community to participate. Email Gray at [email protected] for more information. Volunteers interested in assisting Friends of Rose Creek projects should visit www.saverosecreek.org or call Zirk at (858) 405-7503.
